Harry Bertoia was born in Italy in 1915. Educated at Detroit Technical High School, Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and later at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Bertoia taught metal crafts at Cranbrook. In 1952 Bertoia designed his patented Diamond Chair for Knoll International. Bertoia was a true inventor of form and an enricher of furniture design with his introduction of a new and raw material. Bertoia turned industrial wire rods into a design staple. Bertoia also worked along side with another world famous designer, Charles Eames to develop his signature molded plywood chairs. Eero Saarinen commissioned Bertoia to design a metal sculptured screen for the General Motors Technical Center in Detroit, MI. Bertoia's awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects as well as AIA's Gold Medal.
